This is my favorite project by far that i have done in my viscom career. This project actually inspires me to want to work at a brewery. I had so much fun working on it. My inspiration for this project was my dad. he wrote a book called catfish sunday (he also wanted to start a brewery, midlife crisis i guess). i wanted to take the components of his title and make it into a beer. My dad is a hardworking man but also he takes the sabbath day seriously and rest. so this beer reflects that. it has an easygoing look and name. The budget for this project was 35 hours. I spent about 10 hours just trying to get the ball rolling on this project. I would think of an idea, research, start doing some designing, then realize that i don't like it and start over. I did this about 4 times till i finally got an idea that worked. I spent about 4 hours on the artwork and imagery for the label and about 4 hours to come up with the original design. I reworked the original design 2 times so i was proud of that. I spent around 2 hours on reworking. so were up to 20 hours....the package design didn't take long at all because it was a lot like the label. So i spend 4 hours total on that with reworking it a bit too. I printed everything and cutting everything out was a bitch so that took 2 hours. Assembling the carrier took an hour or so and putting the labels and the caps on the bottles took another hour. so 28 hours total on the beer itself, ill take it! The ad took a total of 4 hours. Half that time i was taking pictures for the ad. so i came in under budget for this project :) by 3 hours! this was hard to keep track of time cause there was soooooo much to do for this project, so give or take a couple of hours on this project but i was still under budget. I'm very happy with how it turned out. i know its a full color job but I i always limit myself to a couple colors, i dont know why.... i guess it makes it easier if your working with a couple colors?....this is going in the portfolio... :D
Society of Illustrators self-mailer/poster design -
This is another piece that I was really proud of. I feel like i have gotten a lot better at coming up with a concept for projects. so the concept was grow your inspiration and i wanted the poster to be a big tree. I liked the idea of having a wavy, curvy, organic tree. I feel like that is a lot like my style, im very into organic looking designs. I vectored this tree in illustrator because i like computer illustration better than paper illustration, or cause I'm better at it. The budget for this project was 16 hours. I went over for sure....i re-worked the original design 6 times. the original design took about 6 hours. my ideas were really flowing on this project, I came up with a concept pretty fast. The tree illustration took about 2 hours. then the layout of the text took FOREVERRRRR. I spend 4 hours doing text layout. (yeah no grid for the first layout, whoops...) Rusty told me that the tree worked fine but the inside was boring :( so i had to add some part of the illustration on the poster to the inside of the pamphlet and even though its 2 color on the inside i added a lot of tones of the spot color. re-working this piece the first 3 times was really hard and i worked on it for a while but no creative juices were flowing so i spent 8 hours on the reworking. but the last 3 pieces i had better ideas and it only took me 6 hours to re-work. i finally decided to get a grid. So that comes out to 20 hours. over budget but worth it cause I like it.
Wick Fowler's 2-Alarm Chili -
This concept took a while for me to come up with but i like how cohesive it is. there is only one thing that i dont like about it....the pictures on the ads and the posters look similar so i wish we only had to do one poster and ad. I think the posters are sexy and sexy appeals in this society now so i think that the concept is perfect. The budget was 22 hours. The poster actually didnt take me long. research and brainstorming took me about 6 hours and as soon as i came up with a concept i banged out the design in 2 hours. taking the photos took only 30 min. and i only had to re-work the posters once :) 8.5 hours for the posters.
the chili can didnt take long either. the things that took the longest on the can was re-doing the logo, and copying a nutrition facts label. total that took about 2 hours. the background of the label and the posters are the same and i tried to make them look similar because if you see the posters, you should recognize the can! the photography of the chili took an hour and putting the design together on the can took about another hour. I reworked the label 2 times so total time for the label was 5.5 hours.
The newspaper ads were fun! haha..not really. Rusty had me get a newspaper and measure the columns....and i verified on google. so the ads are 4 columns wide (1 column is 1.83 inches) by 7.5 inches tall...so that equals 30 column inches. the ads were simple because i just took the poster and made the flames one color and everything else black and white. time for the ads? 2 hours.
Finally i had to do the animated banner. I really didnt know how to tackle this. So my brilliant mind decided to make the fire move! it looks great but took a while. i took the whole time on this and it took me 3 hours.
total for wick Fowler? 19 hours. again since there was so much that had to be done on this project it was difficult to track all the time so give or take a couple hours but that is still under budget. that seemed like it took forever though.
The Secret of Feeling Full Magazine Spread -
wow there is only one component to this project! The major issue with this spread was that it was extremely type heavy. I was so overwhelmed with type that didnt have a grid on the first draft. like always. the photography on this was difficult too. at first i photographed my friend "feeling full" but i guess it just looked like he felt sick :(. so i tried to take a different approach. i read part of the article and found out that its about drugs and pills that help you lose weight or feel full. so thats how i got my article photo. i like the angle a lot so thats working. photography on this project took about 2 hours. type layout was so frustrating. that was the longest part. overall i spent 11 hours on this layout. i reworked it 6 times so each time i did a rework it was about an hour. that damn orange box was a pain in the ass but i like where it ended up. the layout turned out well and i will definitely handle type heavy layouts better the next time.
How Safe magazine layout -
SWeet! another project that has one component! so refreshing from the chili blog. WHY DO I NEVER START OUT WITH A GRID! i really need to change that. unlike the Secret spread this one had NO content! so that was a challenge. i wanted to fill the layout with photography. I figured whats more "safe questioning" than a big knife? so that was my main photo and in the article they mention a lot of foods that are surprisingly not safe and the only one of those foods that i had was eggs. so you get some pretty eggs in this layout. there was a challenge with the egg photo. i had to make the photo overlap with that box and that was hard but it turned out well. even though this is a 4 color i always like to just stick with one color on my projects...i need to think more colorfully. the one color makes it simple however and its not overwhelming which is something that you need when your reading an article. the budget for this was 9 hours just like the last spread. i spent 2 hours on the photography, 1 hour on the type layout, and 3 hours on the designing. i reworked this 4 times from the original design so thats 2 hours on re-working. i came in under budget!
Scarlet Letter dust jacket/audio book -
Such a classic. I remember doing this project in illustration. i thought that this project was going to be easy and fun actually. I really dont think that i chose the right book. the only reason i chose to do the scarlet letter is because i read it and i thought that it would make designing the content easy. WRONG. i think that its kind of boring. again there is not a lot of color on the book, but its come a long way from the original design. there was like one color...scarlet. haha. rusty loved that. The budget for this was 16 hours. i started with the photography because i had a great idea for the cover. so original photography took me 2 hours. brainstorming and research took another 2 hours. then i started to design the dust cover which took up 4 hours. that was only for the original design. i did 4 re-designs which included another photography shoot. so the 2nd photography shoot took another 2 hours. the redesigns, with adding color for rusty, took about 4 hours. The comes the cd case....oye. I spend way to much time on that. i didnt know what to put on the cd case! no one has book on cds. NO ONE. but rusty reluctantly approved my design with missing content. i spent 4 hours on the original design of the cd, getting the template and dimensions and all that jazz. the re-design to the final approved piece was another 4 hours. all this time doesnt include the itunes and ibooks components. that only took me about an hour each. so total time on this project spent was 24 hours. :( SO OVER BUDGET. whoops. like i said i thought this was going to be easy because i had read the book and did a project like this in illustration. it was more difficult the second time but i think thats because i picked the wrong book. not my favorite approval but it will have to do.
Before mid-term approvals
Detours - Looking back on this layout i really didn't think this was a great layout, but looking at it now im really proud of how it turned out! i didnt make any changes to this design. if i would make some changes it would be to add something to the right page on the first spread. its very blank on top and kind of bothers me but it also is good to have some negative space since there is a picture that takes up almost the entire left page of that spread. having that negative space is why i added that watercolor picture of iowa so the page doesnt look so flat. looking overall over the semester i see that i have a lot of magazine layouts that have been approved. I dont know whether or not this is because they are easier to design or because i have gotten pretty good at it. i would like to think that ladder.
Native American Heritage Month - My best project from last semester :) Again i didn't make any changes to this piece. i didn't make any changes to any of the projects from before mid-term. the only thing that i think i could have approved on these posters are the pictures of the faces on each poster. maybe make the faces more uniform in color/contrast or have some border around them to make it a more clean look. other than that im very happy with the layout and my concept of this poster. my favorite project from the pre-midterm projects.
Summer Excursion - after doing this poster i really wanted to go on this course. Another one of my favorite posters to design because i got some good information and all the pictures from my brother and his wife. I was lucky that i had a variety of great pictures to choose from on this project. The concept was good on this, but it took a little finessing to get it just right. i feel like the background it a little boring but rusty likes it and if hes okay with it then i am too. that would have been the only thing i would have wanted to change. The color doesnt really sit well with me either. But the client/art director is happy so i dont mess with it.
Time Magazine spread - OMG IS THIS MY LAST BLOG POST. kind of ironic it being a spread about being stressed out. im not stress out any more! I loved this spread because the title relates to me and probably most of the viscom class. it was hard for me to decide on an idea because when i read this article i thought of so many visuals that i could do that could go with this. i ended up with the text because i think that gives it a stressed out/crazy vibe and that fits with the article. if i could do something different i would have done speech ballons/thought bubbles since the article has to do with talking about how stressed you are instead of actually being stressed. The reason for the red is because its color that is associated with stress or something bad. and actually the color red is said to increase your heart hate. thats why sexy ads use red and ads that want to get your attention use red. its a very effective color and this is a very effective spread.
Self Reflection Blurb - i really cannot believe that this semester is over. it went by so fast. thats probably because we had a million things to work on all at the same time. i can definitely say that the second half of the semester went SO much smoother than the first half. I was able to get things approved in a timely manner and i was more aware of time spend on projects. i went over budget on a lot of projects last semester and this semester i only went over on one project! granted that was the first project that i did this half of the semester too. I learned that when i was stuck on something i needed to walk away from it and just not think rather than wasting time on it and going over budget. compared to before midterm, the projects done for this half of the semester are much better. there is a sense of maturity in my projects. I am really glad that i have taken viscom 2 and 3 this semester because i feel like i will be very well prepared for viscom 4 in the fall. I am really excited and looking forward to the future and getting out in the world and designing for a great company. Viscom 2 class had been a great class to prepare me for my future and (not to get brownie points or anything- but if it helps im okay with that) Rusty has been my favorite teacher. He is to the point about what he wants you to change and upfront with how your design actually looks. if i can get though his criticism i can handle anything. thanks for a great semester Rusty!!!!!
